Indian Retail Sector Sees 2.24 MSF Leasing Vol in Q2 2025 

India’s retail sector recorded 2.4 million sq ft of leasing in Q2 2025, a 55% year-on-year increase and a 6% rise from the previous quarter, according to Cushman & Wakefield. 

Hyderabad led activity with 0.8 million sq ft, accounting for 34% of the total and marking 106% growth year-on-year. 

High streets in HITEC City and Jubilee Hills, along with emerging areas such as Kothapet, Secunderabad, Boduppal, and Kompally, were key contributors.

FAME Awards Honour India’s Top Malls

The FAME Awards 2025, held at ETRetail’s The Fashion XP in Bengaluru, recognised leading shopping centres across categories.

Ambience Mall was named Shopping Mall of the Year (National), Quest Mall won Shopping Mall of the Year (Luxury), and Essensai067 received the Sustainable Mall of the Year award.

Noida Authorities Tighten Waste Management Rules

The Noida Authority has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Gulshan Mall in Sector 125 for multiple breaches of solid waste management rules. 

Inspectors found the mall failed to segregate waste and handed garbage to unauthorised scrap dealers, who dumped it roadside. 

Shopkeepers inside were also found using single-use plastic, despite a citywide ban.

China Opens World's First Robot Mall 

Beijing has inaugurated what it calls the world’s first dedicated robot shopping mall in the city’s high-tech E-Town district. 

Operating on a 4S model similar to car dealerships, the four-storey complex houses over 100 types of robots from nearly 200 brands, including Ubtech Robotics and Unitree Robotics. 

Prices range from consumer devices at around US$278 to advanced humanoids costing several million dollars.

U.S. Malls Fill Vacant Spaces with Unconventional Tenants

American malls are rethinking vacant anchor spaces by welcoming non-traditional tenants such as churches, entertainment venues, and food halls. 

Dayton Mall in Ohio recently leased a large unit to a church, while others are converting stores into bowling alleys, laser tag arenas, apartments, and expanded dining areas. 

The shift reflects efforts to keep malls relevant as retail demand evolves.

A new Nielsen survey shows Dubai malls are increasingly serving as multi-purpose destinations. Ninety-seven per cent of respondents cited dining as a primary reason for their visit, placing food and beverage on par with shopping and grocery trips. 

The study also found that average visits now last up to four hours, with shoppers covering multiple outlets and making up to five purchases per trip.

Recycling Facilities to Become Mandatory in Malaysian Malls

From January 1, 2026, all shopping malls in Malaysia will be required to provide recycling facilities as part of their business licence terms.

The directive, announced by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, is aimed at tackling plastic waste and will apply nationwide.
